Vape Maintenance 101: How to Clean Your Tank to Make It Taste Better
Have you ever been excited to try a new e-liquid, only to find that it tastes like a strange mix of your last three flavors? Or worse, has your reliable all-day vape suddenly started to taste burnt, weak, or just plain "off"?
One of the most common problems vapers have is this, and 99% of the time, it's not your device or e-liquid that's the problem. Your tank is broken. The most important thing you can do to get a pure, vibrant flavor from your vape is to keep the tank clean. The gunk, residue, and caramelized sweetener that builds up quickly in old e-liquids can "ghost" new flavors and ruin your experience.
The good news is that it's very easy to clean your tank. A quick rinse for five minutes can bring back the flavor to "like-new" condition. This is a simple, step-by-step guide to getting it right.
When do you need to clean your tank? There are two main times when you need to clean your tank:
-
Your coil is the engine of your vape, so be careful when you change it. You should always clean your tank quickly when it's time to change it (usually every 1–2 weeks).
-
When you want to change the taste of something, like going from a sweet Strawberry Custard to a sour Blue Razz? You need to clean the tank. Strong flavors like coffee, menthol, and anise are well-known "ghosts" that will stay around if you don't.
The Easy "Rinse and Dry" Method (Works in 90% of Cases)
Every time you change your coil, you should use this quick and easy method.
• Step 1: Take the Tank Apart. Take your tank apart all the way. This means taking off the top cap, unscrewing the base, and taking out the glass part. Most importantly, get rid of the old coil. You can never wash a coil that has been used.
• Step 2: Clean all the parts. Fill a bowl with warm water. Don't use soap! Soap leaves behind a bad-tasting residue that is hard to get rid of. All you have to do is rinse the base, top cap, chimney, glass, and mouthpiece (drip tip) under warm, running water.
• Step 3: Clean and dry. This is the most important part. Dry each piece with a paper towel or a clean, lint-free cloth. Get inside the threads, the chimney, and all around the base. Any water droplets that are still there will make your new e-liquid less strong and could make it gurgle or spit.
Step 4: Put everything back together. Put your tank back together, making sure that all of the O-rings, which are small rubber gaskets, are in the right place.
• Step 5: Put in a new coil. This is the last step. You can put in your new coil after the tank is clean and put back together.
The "Deep Clean" Method (for Ghost Flavors That Won't Go Away)
So, you vaped a strong coffee or cinnamon flavor, and the "Rinse & Dry" method didn't work? It's time to clean it well.
• Step 1: Take apart the tank and take out the coil, as shown in "Step 1" above.
• Step 2: Get a small bowl and fill it with one of these three things instead of just water:
o Vodka with a high proof and no flavor
o Propylene Glycol (PG), which is a key part of e-liquid
• A mix of 50% water and 50% white vinegar
• Step 3: Soak all of the tank parts in the bowl for 30 to 60 minutes, but not the O-rings. The alcohol or vinegar will get rid of the oily, sticky stuff that water can't. If you use vinegar, you might want to soak the O-rings separately for a few minutes because it can be hard on them.
• Step 4: After soaking, rinse everything well under warm, running water to get rid of any vodka or vinegar that might still be there.
• Step 5: As usual, dry and put back together.
Cleaning your tank for just a few minutes will save you money. Your new coils will last longer because they won't have to work in a dirty environment, and you'll enjoy your e-liquid more because it tastes better. This simple habit is what makes the difference between casual vapers and real fans. A happy device is one that is clean.
All-in-one pod systems and disposable vapes are great options for people who don't want to deal with the hassle. But anyone with a tank has to do this. A good shop can help you if you need new coils or a whole new tank. Paradise Vape & Smoke in Rex is a great place to go if you want to get hands-on help with your specific device.
